Letting Go.

What would you save if your house was up in flames?

My guess is that none of you said nothing. We all have those special priceless possessions, from past relatives, to children, and our spouses that would be hard to separate from. And that’s ok. As long as they’re on display in a simple and caring manner, or tucked gently away in a special memory box then I have no complaints.

It’s those other possessions we hold onto that don’t add value to our lives that we must learn to part with. That slow cooker sitting there on your kitchen counter waiting to be used again, it needs to go. That pile of books you’ll one day read, they need to go. And that closet full of unworn clothes, they need to go.

There are many reasons we hold onto things. Let me explain.

1) Your Mum gave you this vase. You don’t like the vase. But your mum gave it to you. She’ll be mad if you got rid of it.

But ask yourself this: would she be mad if you gave it to someone who valued it more? Would she be mad if you sold it and used the money to help pay the bills?

I doubt it. Just ask her, if you can, or take that leap and remove it.

2) You’ll use that exercise bike one day. You promise. You promise even though it makes you feel unhappy as it stares at you while you sit on the sofa watching another film.

Ask yourself this: would I feel better if it wasn’t there? Would you enjoy your space more? Would someone else benefit from it?

If you answer yes to any of those, out it goes. It’s perfectly fine to feel guilty as you throw it out, but tomorrow look at that space you’ve made, and notice the difference it makes to your feelings. Feels good doesn’t it?

3) You’re going to have a party soon, well, probably, you’re not sure when to be honest, but those paper plates, those extra ten glasses, and that board game will be used then.

Ask yourself this: are you saving more just-in-case items than you like? Are you really going to be at a loss if you don’t have them? Can you easily buy/hire some more when the occasion comes along?

There may be other reasons, but these three are the most common I come across.

And hey, if you don’t feel like doing it all by yourself, get the family involved, some friends or even a professional organiser.
